Program Overview

Roane State Community College currently offers an online Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology.  This program will prepare students to become Registered Health Information Technicians, which is a growing field in the medical business.  Upon completing the program, students can take the credentialing exam from the American Health Information Management Association in order to become registered.

The course requires 66 credits and is on a rotating schedule over a period of four semesters.  In order to be accepted into the program, students must first take a series of basic medical courses, including introduction courses in computer, health information technology, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.  The second semester continues with these courses and also includes classes in legal aspects and disease processes.  Students go on in the third semester to learn about statistics, reporting, and coding.  The final semester includes classes in advanced health information technology and coding/classification as well as reimbursement methodologies and professional practice.   Students must also include in each semester a general education elective.

Registered Health Information Technicians (RHITs) review medical records to ensure their quality, making sure the records are accurate and properly entered into the computer system.  They can also use applications to analyze patient data in order to improve patient care and costs.  Because this is a rapidly growing field, there are several employment opportunities in almost any type of health care facility.  Most RHITs work in hospitals, though they can also be in other health-care facilities such as physician practices, nursing homes, and various health agencies.
