Program Overview

Richland College currently offers a Supervisor Level 1 Certificate, which falls under the Management Degree program.  This degree is designed for students who wish to pursue entry-level supervisory positions in business.  The program offers courses on practical supervisory skills in areas of leadership, problem solving, human resources, and team building.  Students learn to develop fundamental skills, knowledge, attitudes, and experiences that can help them function as leaders and decision-makers.   With more experience and/or education, an employee can advance in their career.

This program requires 18 credit hours and can be completed within 2 semesters.  The first semester includes Introduction to Business, Principles of Management, and Supervision.  The second semester includes Problem Solving and Decision Making and Human Resources Management.  The second semester also includes a class on Management Cooperative Education, Administration and Management, which is a unique experience and provides a great benefit to students.  Courses in Management Cooperative teach students to apply management concepts to their current jobs and thus bridge the gap between theory and practice in their careers as professional managers.   If a student wishes to transfer to a four year-school, they should consult with an advisor on the ability to transfer these courses.

A supervisor serves as an area coordinator or manager in a business or institution.  Duties include giving instructions to workers and managing the efficiency of the work.  Supervisors are held responsible for the actions of employees; therefore it is important that he or she possesses the skills that are covered in this course.   A supervisor differs from a manager in that he or she does not have budget or “high/fire” authority.  Otherwise the two positions are similar in that they both are responsible for worker productivity and relations.
