Program Overview

Richland currently offers a Level One certificate in Business Office Systems and Support—Office Assistant, which prepares students for entry-level positions in office support.  Using state-of-the-art technology, students will develop the necessary skills in order to become an efficient member of any business office.  Students will study areas dealing with office management, human relations, records management, and communications.  Computer courses will also be covered extensively, focusing on word processing, keyboarding, and other relevant applications.

This program requires a minimum of 16 credit hours and can be completed within one semester.  Classes will cover topics such as computer fundamentals and applications, medical administrative support and software, Business English, records and information management, and keyboarding/word processing.  Students are also required to take a business/office elective.   If a student wishes to transfer to a four year-school, they should consult with an advisor on the ability to transfer these courses.

An entry-level office administer provides basic support to the office team of an organization, and with more experience and/or education can have access to higher employment opportunities.  An Administrative Assistant works closely with supporting the management of an institution and must have good project management, communication, organizational, and computer skills.  Besides basic word-processing and outside correspondence, duties also often include bookkeeping and keeping budgets.  In some places administrative assistances will make appointments, admit clients, and organize meetings and events.  Companies may even require someone who can do things like maintain websites, make travel arrangements, take notes in a meeting, or organize catering for an event; therefore this job requires not only a wide range of skills but a certain amount of flexibility.
