Program Overview

Richland College currently offers a Business Office Systems and Support Associate—Executive Assistant in Applied Sciences Degree.  The curriculum is an advanced program that helps prepare students for executive assistant and computer support employment in an executive office environment.

Using state-of-the-art technology, students will develop the necessary skills in order to become an efficient member of any business office.  Students will study areas dealing with office management, human relations, records management, and oral and written business communications.  Computer courses will also be covered extensively, focusing on word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and telecommunication applications.

This program requires a minimum of 61 credit hours and can be completed in four semesters.  The first semester will cover basic computer applications, keyboarding, medical software applications, and business English.  The second semester consists of word processing, administrative office procedures, and business presentations.  For the third semester, students will learn business correspondence and communications, spreadsheets, records and information management, and business math.  The final semester will include database, cooperate education, speech, and other advance computer programs.

Students will have several options regarding preferred classes needed for completing the degree.  Basic education classes are also included, such as Natural Science, History, and a Humanities elective.

The role of an executive assistant is slightly different from an administrative assistant.  The executive assistant works directly for a company officer and has more authority to make decisions that affect the company.  Duties also include preparing research, managing correspondence, and communicating between the company officer and other parties.  This worker is a sort of gatekeeper who must understand the requirements and policies of the officer while knowing which events, meetings, or other issues are the most appropriate for the executive’s time and energy.
