Program Overview

Richland College currently offers an Accounting Assistant Certificate (level 1), a program designed for students who wish to expand their knowledge of basic accounting and business principles.  Courses also emphasize the development of communication and human relations skills needed in pursuing and advancing a career in accounting and other business careers.

The certificate requires a minimum of 31 credit hours and can be completed in two semesters.  Classes include Principles of Accounting, Computerized Accounting, Computer Applications, Communications, and Business/Math Applications.  Students also have the option of choosing a Business/Technical Elective.  In certain classes (such as computer courses), if a student demonstrates proficiency and previous training, a student may substitute another class from the Electives list.  Courses in this program are also applicable to the Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in Accounting.  Students in the program are exempt from the Texas Success Initiative standards.

Accountants assemble, analyze, process, and communicate important information about financial operations using the “language of business.” Those with accounting degrees may search for entry-level accounting positions in several types of companies and institutions such as accounting or manufacturing firms, small businesses, banks, schools, hospitals, and various governmental agencies.  With more experience and education, graduates may then pursue an advanced career in accounting.
