Doctor of Ministry / Military Ministry

Program Details

If your calling is to serve within the armed forces, then Regent University hosts an online Doctor of Ministry with a concentration in Military Ministry to fit your career.  This concentration will prepare you for chaplaincy within any branch of the US military, or even, the Canadian or British forces.  You will gain the skills and leadership abilities to minister effectively whether in times of peace or war, on-base or on the battlefield.  The coursework in Regent’s Doctor of Ministry focuses on the needs of military personnel and the stresses within that distinct environment, such as:

  • Advising leaders
  • Multicultural and multi-faith settings
  • Military ministry synthesis

Regent’s Doctorate of Ministry can be completed at your own pace, online, with the option of an on-campus residency.  The residency involves a 4-day stay on Regent’s Virginia Beach campus.


Students are required to attend an on-campus seminar of 1 to 1.5 weeks for each core course, while completing substantial pre- and post-session assignments at home.

  • An applicant must have completed either of the following:
    • Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree (or equivalent theological master's degree of at least 72 credit hours) from an ATS accredited, graduate institution
    • M.Div. equivalency of 72 credit hours of graduate-level coursework, with at least 48 credit hours being graduate-level theological studies courses
  • A cumulative master's degree GPA of at least 3.0
  • Current activity in a church or parachurch ministry context
  • A minimum of 3 years of significant ministry experience; experience must be gained following the completion of 72 credit hours of graduate coursework
  • High intellectual achievement and scholarship as evidenced by college transcripts and the applicant's writing sample
  • spiritual maturity, integrity of character and willingness to grow as a leader
  • Personal goals consistent with the mission of Regent University
  • A positive recommendation from a clergy member
  • Submit a professional resume or curriculum vitae that highlights your senior-level ministry and leadership experience
