Program Details

The mission of the B.S. in Professional Studies is to prepare Christian leaders for the workplace. This major is distinct from a business degree, for example, in that the purpose is not necessarily to develop business specialists or managers, but individuals who can function effectively and efficiently in the workplace regardless of their position.

The B.S. in Professional Studies degree builds upon the core competencies introduced in the General Education curriculum and focuses on the skills, knowledge, and wisdom that are critical to success in the workplace: written and oral communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, biblical worldview, service, leadership, and stewardship. The BS in Professional Studies requires 24 credit hours of core curriculum plus 21 credit hours in an emphasis for a total of 45 credits.

Students majoring in Professional Studies complete eight (8) core courses (24 credits).

  • BUSN 250 Business Communication (3) or COMM 240 Cross-Cultural Communication (3)
  • ENGL 308 Business and Technical Writing (3)
  • ISYS 204 Introduction to Information Systems (3)
  • LDST 201 Survey of Leadership (3)
  • LDST 325 Teams and Virtual Teams (3)
  • LDST 340 Organizational Behavior (3)
  • MGMT 280 Principles of Management (3)
  • MGMT 330 Ethics (3)

The B.S. in Professional Studies offers flexibility to students in fulfilling the emphasis requirement. The emphasis can be selected from the liberal arts (e.g., English, History) or from a professional area (e.g., Criminal Justice, Business, and Information Systems). The emphasis requires 21 credits, in which 12 credits must be at the 300-400 level within the selected discipline. The purpose of requiring 21 credits is to prepare students for graduate work in a particular discipline, if they so choose. The B.S. in Professional Studies also offers an alternative to IDS students who do not wish to or are unable to continue with their teacher education degree. Instead of losing those credits and having to switch majors, an IDS student can apply his or her education credits to the professional studies degree, graduate, and perhaps teach in a private school setting.

The B.S. in Professional Studies offers emphases in the following disciplines:

  • Biblical and Theological Studies
  • Business
  • Christian Ministry
  • Communication Studies
  • Criminal Justice
  • English
  • Government
  • History
  • Information Systems Technology
  • Leadership Studies
  • Psychology
