Program Overview

Raritan Valley Community College offers an Electronic Health Record Certificate of Completion program. This program was developed in conjunction with the Office of the National Coordinator of the Department of Health and Human Services Department of the Federal government to produce workers who are prepared to implement, support, and train healthcare providers in the use of the electronic health record (EHR). There are two primary types of positions: mobile adoption support positions and permanent staff of health care delivery and public health sites. Within these main categories, there are a variety of roles from which students can choose to concentrate and focus their program on. Students will select one area of interest and take all of the coursework associated with that role in order to successfully complete the Electronic Health Record Certificate of Completion program.

With the mobile adoption support positions, employees are responsible for assisting with and facilitating the implementation of changes in the work place and when their work is done they move on to new locations. These roles include Practice Workflow and Information Management Redesign Specialist, Clinician/Practitioner Consultant, Implementation Support Specialist, and Implementation Manager. Workers in these roles would generally work together in teams and would be employed by regional extension centers, providers, vendors, or state/local public health agencies.

For those who wish to be permanent staff of health care delivery and public health sites, students can choose to either be a Trainer or a Technical/Software Support staff member. These roles are critical to the ongoing support of health information technology in hospitals, practices, health centers, long-term care facilities, health information exchange organizations and public health agencies. Depending on which role students choose to pursue, the credit requirements range from 18 to 23 credits. It should also be noted that students must have a background in either information technology or a health related field to be eligible for this program.
