Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) offers a Corrections Certificate for those seeking employment in a correctional institution. The certificate equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to advance as correctional practitioners. The 21 credit program can be easily completed within a year. It includes the following courses: criminology, juvenile delinquency, criminal procedure, probation and parole, and theory and practice of corrections. Although this program is offered online, a few of the required courses may be only offered onsite at the college. However, RVCC assures that at least 85 percent of the courses are offered online.
Students learn the operations of correctional institutions on both practical and theoretical levels. Students also analyze how law enforcement, courts, and corrections function as components of the criminal justice system. It should be noted that the certificate is not a substitute for an academic degree and will not qualify a person for a position that requires a degree. However, if the student chooses to pursue a degree all the courses in the Corrections’ certificate program may be applied to RVCC’s Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice.
