Library Media Masters Degree
Portland State University offers a Library Media Master’s Degree that is well suited for individuals who wish to become media specialists for Pre K-12. Students participating in the program will gain in-depth knowledge on computer applications within the classroom, children’s/young adult literature, organization of media collections, methods/procedures, research strategies, and more. Through the program, individuals will typically enhance their knowledge base of library media to positively impact the lives of children and young adults. Individuals who pursue this certificate often work within school libraries or in communities.
The Library Media Master’s Degree Program is an addition to the Library Media Endorsement and the Initial K-12 Licensure. Students must complete all coursework for the Library Media Endorsement or the Initial K-12 License. Students must then complete required courses and elective courses in order to earn their Library Media Master’s Degree. Required courses included within the curriculum include Advanced Methods and Procedures in School/Library Media Centers, Research Strategies for Library Media Specialists, and a Directed Field Experience. The courses for this program are expertly crafted to ensure that graduates will be knowledgeable, competent, and professional while working in school or community libraries.
The hybrid learning format provides flexibility for enrolled students who are employed or have other obligations. Students must be highly disciplined to complete a large amount of coursework. Time management, a reliable internet connection, and word processing skills are very important for students who enroll.
