Students interested in pursuing Penn Foster’s Medical Administrate Assistant Diploma program will need to complete a total of nine courses. Students begin their learning with Penn Foster by taking an Introduction to Allied Health course. This provides the student with a discussion of strategies for completing the allied health programs, giving an introduction to health care and the role medical administrative assistants play. Students are taught the duties occurring in a business office, such as planning meetings, electronic and print mail processing, office math, and facility care and management.
Students learn about law, ethics, and confidentiality, and how law affects medical offices and medical professionals. Students study the process of litigation, how contract law affects health professionals, and the expectation of health care professionals after a patient-doctor relationship has been established. Students examine Confidentiality in Allied Health, studying the laws regulating healthcare information.
As part of the Medical Administrative Assistant courses, students take a computer course to ensure basic Word and Excel proficiency. Students should learn all of the body systems and proper medical terminology. In Basic Pharmacology, students receive an introduction into pharmacology, learning the type of drugs, side effects and uses.
