Dressmaking and Design Diploma
Penn Foster

Program Details

Penn Foster Career School offers a diploma in Dressmaking and Design. Consisting of seven Instruction Sets, the students will be taught about identifying fabrics by learning how to care for each of them.

Students receive an introduction to sewing, learning the tools necessary to complete a garment. The students take measurements, prepare patters, practice threading machines, remove burrs, and study how to set sewing machine timing and tension. Courses are designed to introduce students to decorate features such as zippers and fasteners. Students are taught advanced dressmaking techniques, which will be useful when they will be required to form pleats, finish corners, and make coats and trousers.  The students work with embroidery tools and stitching to make belt loops and attach beading and fringes.

As a project, the students select a material, mark, cut, and tack the fabric. After the pattern has been completed, students finish the garments. The final Instruction Set includes practices such as altering a neckline, and adjusting sleeves. The student customizes a dress form, performing draping techniques.

Those who successfully complete Penn Foster’s Dressmaking and Design Diploma program may be suitable for employment in a design agency, working for a tailor, or simply creating designs as a hobby.
