Medical Billing and Coding
Students have the opportunity to earn a Diploma in Medical Billing and Coding through Penn Foster Career School, beginning with the course Introduction to Allied Health. Students cover typical office duties such as telephone call management, travel planning, and task management. The students study litigation and its alternatives, as well as criminal law relating to the health profession. Students are expected to display proficient Word and Excel competency, as they will be working with applications dealing with word processing and spreadsheets. In Business English, students practice writing professional letters, memos, and forms, being careful to use proper grammar and sentence and paragraph cohesion.
Students study the body systems and learn correct terminology of the systems. In Basic Pharmacology, students receive training in learning the drug’s generic and trade names, as well as side effects and uses. Students are taught basic medical coding, including exploring ICD-9-CM and CPT manuals, and an introduction to the transition of ICD-1- coding. Students are training in cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, radiology, laboratory work, inpatient coding, and pathology. Students utilize the application of the CPT and ICD-9-CM classification systems to code procedures and diagnoses.
Finally, students take a course in Electronic Medical Records, providing an overview on how to manage electronic medical records (EMRs). Throughout the program, students should learn EMR terminology, procedures, concepts and regulations, receiving hands-on training with an EMR.
