Program Details

The online Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science program is ideal for working professionals with baccalaureate degrees who are looking to refresh or upgrade their current skills in order to be more competitive in the rapidly changing field.  Students will learn how to improve day-to-day tasks throughout all sectors of society, from tracking the spread of pollutants to navigating automobiles and emergency vehicles along optimal routes.  Courses may include:

  • Remote Sensing I: Principles and Applications 
  • GIScience I: Introduction to Geographic Information Science
  • Geospatial Perspectives on Intelligence, Security & Ethics
  • GIScience II: Analysis and Applications
  • GIScience III: Programming for Geospatial Analysis


  • Bachelor's degree (in any field) from a college or university
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA for all undergraduate course work
  • At least two years of working in a field or organization related to geographic information science
  • Be prepared to complete graduate-level course work toward the certificate
  • Basic computer literacy 
  • Applicants should have in their record an introductory cartography course or have equivalent experience. A cartography course can also be pursued in tandem with the required certificate courses
  • Prior experience with relational databases or spatial analysis (not required) will be extremely helpful
