Master of Arts in English
Northwestern State University of Louisiana

Program Details

Northwestern State University of Louisiana offers an online Master of Arts in English degree.  This English degree program is flexible, allowing students to choose from five concentrations, depending on their interests and career goals:

  • Writing and Linguistics
  • Literature
  • Folklife/Southern Culture
  • Generalist
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The Writing and Linguistics concentration prepares students to write professionally, either in creative or technical writing careers.  The Literature concentration helps students understand the messages and meanings behind text, including both fiction and non-fiction text and both written and oral formats.  The Folklife/Southern Culture concentration is designed for those interested in the literature, history, and culture of the U.S. South and in the folklore from the South and around the world.  The Generalist concentration covers the other concentrations and provides a broad study of English; this is the concentration for those who are unsure of which area they wish to focus on while earning their degree in English.  The TESOL concentration provides students with the knowledge they need to teach English to those whose native language is not English, both in the United States and abroad.
