The Master of Education in Online Reading degree offered by Northwest Nazarene University is a program of study available to students in a completely online format. This program aims to help classroom teachers who have either elementary, secondary, or special education certification, and who wish to improve their skills and knowledge related to reading instruction and literacy leadership, as well as to advance their careers. By the end of this program, a student will be able to plan and implement instruction. This begins with pre-reading skills and continues through advanced comprehension. Students will learn to use data from many different kinds of assessment that impact student achievement, and to be a resource for their school and district concerning instructional leadership and online reading.
This program requires students to take and complete 35 credit hours in order to graduate with the Master of Education in Online Reading. This program can be completed in 24 months. The required courses include: Online Summer Program Orientation, The Learning Process, Brain Research and Reading, Teaching and Assessing Early reading and Spelling, Statistical Applications for Educators, Effective Classroom Instruction for English Language Learners, Reading for Meaning, Teaching and Assessing Reading and Writing: Secondary and Intermediate, The Literacy Focused School, and an Online Supervised Practicum. Students must also complete three Online Summer Orientations, all with different subject matters related to this area of study. Students must also compile and complete Action Research and an E-Portfolio to finish this program. The Research and E-Portfolio will convey what the students have learned throughout their course of study in the Master of Education in Online Reading program of study.
