Associate of Applied Science in Practical Nursing
Northland Community and Technical College offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Practical Nursing for students who want to learn about the demands and requirements of nursing. Students will prepare to work under the supervision of registered nurses and learn to use practical nursing skills needed for maintenance of health, prevention of illness, and the observation and care of patients. Upon completion of the program, students may demonstrate their knowledge about health care delivery and the various aspects of health management and care services which nurses will be responsible for providing.
Students will take part in a general education curriculum necessary for advanced training in the requirements and activities of licensed nurses. The curriculum consists of 63 credit hours of classes which include math applications for nurses, anatomy and physiology, and maternal and child health.
Students who complete this nursing degree may have the potential to display an understanding of the optimal health and normal function for self and individuals across lifespan, the ability to collect and record objective and subjective data within the scope practice of a practical nurse, and the ability to perform basic nursing skills with dexterity, competency, insight, and safety within the scope of practice for a beginning practical nurse.
Lastly, students will be expected to display communication and listening skills which can assist clients across the lifespan to cope with problems which affect health and rehabilitation within the scope of practice for the practical nurse, and to demonstrate the ability to contribute to the evaluation of the effectiveness of nursing actions and contribute to establishing a new nursing approach as needed within the scope of practice for the practical nurse.
