Northeast Iowa Community College
The Accounting Clerk diploma program offered by Northeast Iowa Community College is designed for students interested in pursuing careers as bookkeepers, payroll clerks or accounting clerks. Students will have the opportunity to participate in practical experiences throughout the program.
Through completion of this program students should be able to maintain business records, balance accounts, prepare statements and state and federal tax returns. Students should have a solid background in mathematics and enjoy working on detailed tasks. This degree requires 32 credit hours of coursework; the courses can include Financial Accounting, Introduction to Business, Payroll Accounting and more.
Eligible applicants will need to submit high school transcripts, ACT scores, previous college transcripts and completion of the ACCUPLACER assessment. Previous graduates from this program have received jobs as customer service representatives, administrative assistants, service clerks and global accounting specialists.
The Accounting Clerk program participates in online distance learning. The online environment allows students to create a class schedule that most effectively works around their busy lives and eliminates the need to commute to campus. Online courses utilize discussion boards, chat rooms, videos and other web resources to teach students.
Distance learning requires students to have reliable and consistent access to the Internet be able to view course materials and grades and interact with classmates and faculty. Students should also have experience with computer operations and understand how to send email, download attachments and save files. Online programs are reading intensive, which requires increased self-motivation to complete work and participate in discussion boards on time. Northeast Iowa Community College uses the Xpress learning management program. Students can enroll in a free Xpress tutorial class to learn about the functions and tools they will be using throughout the program.

Northeast Iowa Community College was founded in 1966 by the State Board of Education as the Area One Vocational -Technical School. In 1979, the Area One Vocational -Technical School changed its name to Northeast Iowa Technical Institute then to Northeast Iowa Community College in 1988. Northeast Iowa Community College is a two-year, public, not-for-profit institution of higher learning with the mission to “provide accessible, affordable, quality education and training to meet the needs of our communities.”
Northeast Iowa Community College supports diploma programs, certificate programs and associate's degree programs, as well as a number of online classes through the distance learning program. Several associate's degrees can be earned completely online.
