North Carolina State University at Raleigh was founded in 1887 by the North Carolina General Assembly as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. In 1931, during the Great Depression, the school was consolidated with two other colleges to become the University of North Carolina. Later, in 1963 the school changed names to the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. After two years of protest, the school changed names again to its current name of North Carolina State University at Raleigh. The school's mission is "to promote an integrated approach to problem solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world."
