Newman University was founded in 1933 by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ and was originally named Sacred Heart College. The school was originally to train the Sisters as teachers and to provide an education for lay women in teacher education, nursing, secretarial science and home economics. In 1973, due to the continued growth of the institution, the college’s name was changed to Kansas Newman College. In 1998 the name was changed again to Newman University. The university's mission is "to empower graduates to transform society." This mission is accompanied by the core values of Catholic identity, academic excellence, culture of services and global perspective.
Students have a variety of options academically at Newman University: undergraduate programs, pre-professional departments, and graduate level programs. For students wanting to complete a degree, but who have a hectic schedule, Newman University offers some select degrees that can be completed through its distance learning program.
