Program Overview

The Accounting/Keyboarding Career Studies Certificate offered by New River Community College is a program of study that is available to students in a completely online format. This program aims to prepare its students with the skills and knowledge to become entry-level assistants to accountants in both service and manufacturing industries. Students will be prepared through training in computerized general ledgers, spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software. This program covers many keyboarding and Accounting competencies. The concepts covered in this program include: payroll, computerized accounting, and general mathematics related to Business. A graduate of this program can use this certificate to either enter into a career in business or to advance their position in a career they already have.

This program requires its students to take and complete 28 credit hours of courses in order to graduate with the Accounting and Keyboarding Career Studies Certificate. When taking courses full time, a student can graduate from this program in two semesters. The required courses include: Payroll Accounting, Principles of Accounting I and II, Keyboarding I and II, Computer Business Applications, Computerized Accounting, Editing and Proofreading Skills, and Business Mathematics I. All of these courses are paramount to graduates of this program acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to succeed at employment positions that require competencies in Accounting and word processing.

    School Overview

    New River Community College was founded in 1959 as New River Vocational-Technical School. The school became part of the Virginia Community College System in 1966 and in 1969 the name was changed to New River Community College. NRCC provides associate's degrees and certificates and is classified as a public, two-year institution. The school operates with the mission to provide comprehensive higher education and workforce training programs and services of superior quality that are financially and geographically accessible and that meet individual, business, and community needs of the Commonwealth.

    Students have a variety of options academically at New River Community College, with a mix of programs within two academic divisions: Arts & Sciences and Business & Technologies. Many associate's degrees can be transferred to four-year institutions. New River Community College offers distance learning options for nontraditional courses. Some degrees and certificates can be completed entirely through these courses.
