Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Sociology degree offered by New Mexico State University is a program of study that is available to students in a completely online format. This program aims to build upon its students’ solid foundation in in the liberal arts and the specific skills and knowledge needed to enter into the career world in fields like education, government, non profit organizations, environmental, and health. An aim of this program is to help students learn sociological concepts and skills in order to apply them directly to a career in business or industry.

The primary focus of this program is learning the practical business related uses of the study of sociology. This program covers concepts like social factors, race, ethnicity, education, and social class that can affect various variables in a professional setting like workplace productivity, organizational effectiveness, dynamics, and environmental policy. This program offers students advanced training in research design and interpretation, managing diversity, organizational analysis, program evaluation, and the assessment and management of social change.

    School Overview

    New Mexico State University, a four-year, public, land-grant institution, was founded in 1888 as Las Cruces College. In 1889, the New Mexico territorial legislature authorized the creation of an agricultural college and experiment station and Las Cruces College became the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Due to rapid growth, in 1960 university status was awarded and the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts became New Mexico State University. The school's mission is "to serve the educational needs of New Mexico’s diverse population through comprehensive programs of education, research, extension education, and public service."

    Students have a variety of options academically at New Mexico State University. There are nine colleges in which students can find a program to interest them. The colleges include:
