Program Details

The Certificate in Sustainability Policy and Environmental Management at New Jersey Institute of Technology is designed to address challenges in climate change and the steady depletion of the world's natural resources due to an ever-growing world population. Program curriculum encompasses environmental economics, environmental science, industrial ecology, political science, law and sociology. Knowledge of all of these areas of study are needed in order to make policies in management that will help towards sustaining the environment.

NJIST offers its certificate program completely online and on campus. Campus is located in Newark, New Jersey, just 20 minutes outside of New York City. Online courses are interactive, emphasizing the importance of discussion boards, which allow open communication with other students and faculty.

Specific courses for the Certificate in Sustainability Policy and Environmental Management include Environmental Economics, Sustainable Development (Introduction), Sustainable Development (Advanced Topics), Legal Aspects of the Environment, Global Environmental Problems, Special Topics in Environmental Science, and Industrial Ecology and Sustainability.

These courses will teach students scientific reasoning behind global-scale environmental problems, the political economy of sustainable development, how to solve conflicts in resource management, pollution control, the legal aspects of controlling air, water and solid waste, as well as the influence of media and language on our perception of the state of the environment. Additionally, students will learn analysis of material flow and life cycle and energy analysis.

Prospective students must have an undergraduate degree with a grade point average of at least a 2.8. Students must also have some general understanding of environmental management in a political and scientific context, both locally and globally.


It is important that students have some understanding of the scientific and political context of sustainability and environmental management both in the United States and globally.
