Program Overview

The Certificate in Social Media Essentials at New Jersey Institute of Technology is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed in marketing. This certificate program prepares its graduates with the knowledge needed to grow competencies in information design, new technologies and communication.

All courses needed to complete certification requirements are offered completely online. New Jersey Institute of Technology boasts that its online educational experience is highly interactive and strives to promote open communication between students and their faculty. Students are able to make their own personal class schedule, fitting easily around their day-to-day life.

The Certificate in Social Media Essentials program requires 12 credit hours of course work, taking an average of one year to complete. Specific courses offered include, Advanced Professional and Technical Communication, Advanced Information Design, Research Methods in Information Design, Theory and Practice of Social Media, Analyzing Social Networks, and Designing Social Media.

Students will learn how to use tagging, wiki, podcasting, tweeting and blogging appropriately as well as have a deep understanding of the relationship between design, communication and technology. Additionally, students will learn concepts such as ethnographic field studies, card sorting, affinity diagramming, and contextual inquiry. Graduates of the certification program will leave the program with a professional ePortfolio of all work done throughout the program that will enhance each individual's professional resume.

Prospective students must have a general understanding of Microsoft Word and familiarity with using the computer as a tool of learning. Additionally, all students must have access to Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional high speed internet.

    Students must have Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional high-speed internet connection access from a computer that is not behind a firewall. Access to Moodle and to synchronous chat are often prevented by many companies' security policies.
