Program Overview

The low-residency Contemplative Education Master's Degree at Naropa University is designed for classroom teachers at all levels, pre-K through college, as well as people interested in transforming teaching and learning. Combining the study of holistic Western educational theory and philosophy with Eastern meditation practices, the low-residency MA in Contemplative Education will give students a strong foundation in contemplative teaching, curriculum development, and personal awareness.

Students who graduate with a degree in Contemplative Education are uniquely prepared to create compassionate and successful learning communities and effect meaningful educational reform, in the classroom and beyond. Students will learn to practice Maitri, Space Awareness, complete and present a Master's research project, and take classes in the afternoon or evening to accommodate their work schedule. Education Beyond the Classroom is an option targeted primarily to non-teachers, students who are interested research, policy, and other areas. The Contemplative Education program is a low-residency, two-year, 38-credit degree program. Students take classes as part of a cohort community.

    School Overview

In 1974, Naropa Institute, which would later become Naropa University, was founded. Located in Boulder, Colorado, Naropa is a private, not-for-profit university. The universities founder, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, was born in Tibet and created Naropa with the goal to create a university that would combine contemplative studies with traditional Western scholastic and artistic disciplines. Today, Naropa University is a recognized leader in contemplative education and teaches professional and personal growth, intellectual development, and contemplative practice through its undergraduate and graduate programs. Through these teachings, Naropa strives to educate its students’ minds, but students as a whole. This is done by cultivating academic excellence and contemplative insight in order to infuse knowledge with wisdom. Naropa University is the first fully accredited Buddhist-inspired University in the United States.

Naropa offers residential bachelor's and master's degree programs in liberal arts subjects, as well as low-residency graduate-level degree programs.
