Program Details

This advanced degree is intended for teachers in secondary and post-secondary environments.  The beauty of this doctorate is that, not only is the curriculum available entirely online, but it is based upon what teachers do every day.  The foundation of this Murray State program is bound within pedagogical framework with the goal of encouraging students to perform in the classroom and beyond.  Doctoral candidates have four specializations to choose from:

  • Literacy
  • Literature
  • Writing
  • Language

Requirements

  • Master's degree in English, English Education, TESOL, or closely related discipline (including Education with significant coursework in English language arts such as reading, writing, and literacy), with 30 gradute credit-hours and a graduate GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • Completion of a graduate-level research skills course in English, English Education, TESOL, or closely related discipline with a grade of 3.0 or higher
  • Sample of writing in the field judged to be indicative of likely success in a doctoral program
  • Portfolio of teaching materials of the applicant's own design indicative of teaching ability
  • Three satisfactory letters of reference, at least two of which address the applicant's academic ability and at least one of which addresses the applicant's teaching ability
  • Satisfactory interview with graduate faculty
