Mississippi University for Women is a four-year, public institution of higher education, located in the city of Columbus, Mississippi. MUW was established in 1884 as the first public women’s college in the United States. The school began as the Industrial Institute and College and later changed its name to Mississippi State College for Women, before it was granted university status in 1974. In 1982, the school began admitting male students after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Mississippi University for Women vs. Hogan that the nursing school’s single-sex admissions policies were in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.
