Correctional Leadership Certificate
The Correctional Leadership Certificate at Minnesota State University-Mankato is ideal for individuals who work in or are pursuing careers in corrections and wish to have a foundational education that is focused on leadership. Students will learn about leadership, planning, managing transformation and policy formation within the corrections sector. Courses in the program can also be applied toward MSUM’s Master of Science in Sociology: Corrections.
The curriculum requires 15 credit hours and is completely online. Students will take courses on topics such as program administration and planning, correctional policy, leadership and transformation, and correctional theory and practice. Graduates will learn how to promote a fair and just correctional system while learning about different cultures, social classes, genders, and other factors within the field. The program teaches practices that are supported by research as they learn about all the various aspects of the criminal justice system in the USA. Students will also learn the importance of the principles of respect, social justice, and belief in the worth and dignity of all people.
Corrections is a term used to describe the various functions of a governmental penalty system and can include imprisonment, probation, and parole. There are many different employment opportunities within the system such as probation and parole officers and wardens. This certificate will not only give students the grounding for starting careers in corrections but also the ability to advance in positions of leadership and management. Students will also learn the various aspects of human worth and dignity.
