Program Overview

The Medical Receptionist Diploma program at Minnesota State Community and Technical College teaches students to become productive members of a medical office team.  Medical receptionists perform a variety of duties within the office including greeting patients, arrange appointments, and provide information and support to patients.  This program will help students develop skills in medical technology, communication, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and other office procedures.   Because healthcare is one of the fastest growing areas in the USA, there is always a high demand for individuals who are trained in medical knowledge and procedures.  Employment opportunities can be found in many places including clinics, insurance companies, public and home health agencies, private practices, long-term care facilities, hospitals, and dental offices.

Those who complete this program have the potential to show excellent organizational, ethical, and business communication skills as well as a sound knowledge in the language of medicine and the various forms of technology used in the healthcare setting.  Individuals will also know how to maintain a healthcare record, apply bookkeeping and insurance procedures, and how to perform various administrative duties in the office including scheduling appointments and telephone communications in order to provide excellent patient service.   Courses include but are not limited to medical documentation and language applications, business communications, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.  Students may be required to take developmental courses in reading, math, and writing in order to prepare them for education on a college level; whether these classes are required or not is determined by the student’s score on the Accuplacer assessment.
