The Accounting Associate of Science degree at Minnesota State Community and Technical College gives students the skills and knowledge to begin their careers in accounting. Students will learn about sound management, preparing, analyzing, and interpreting financial statements, and about the American legal system and how it relates to business. The program also includes concepts in computerized accounting. This degree provides students with the first two years of the Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting subject areas, and includes general education courses.
Students will be given a comprehensive background in the principles, procedures, and theories of organizing and running financial and business transactions. Students who complete the program are also eligible for entry-level employment in many different institutions in the accounting department. Graduates have the capability to be able to exhibit skills and knowledge needed in accounting related careers. Individuals will also learn how to be proficient with various computerized accounting systems and software in order to process financial information. Classes include subjects on accounting software, business concepts, investment, financial statements, and many other topics. General education courses consist of a wide range of academic areas such as mathematics, various sciences, communications, and humanities; this will provide the student with a broad and globally-based knowledge and skill-set.
This degree requires a total of 60 credit hours. Students may be required to take developmental courses in reading, math, and writing in order to prepare them for education on a college level; whether these classes are required is determined by the student’s score on the Accuplacer assessment. Students who wish to continue their education in a related field at a baccalaureate institution are advised to consult a counselor to ensure the transferability of the courses to the intended college or university.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College (“M State”) is a two-year public institution of higher education, located in the city of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Students can enroll in courses at M State’s campuses in Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena. The Fergus Falls campus has a liberal arts focus, and about 75 percent of its students transfer to four-year colleges and universities after they attend M State.
M State offers associate's degree and certificate programs. Many students at M State choose to complete the first two years of their bachelor's degree by earning a University Transfer degree at any of the or online through eCampus. M State’s eCampus offers over 25 programs and majors that can be completed entirely online.
