Program Overview

Miami Dade College offers an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Management for students who are interested in careers relating to health care information systems, including billing, insurance claims, medical coding, hospital records, and patient records. Students will learn about the medical industry and medical terminology in order to develop a fundamental understanding of the purposes of health care information systems and will study those systems in order to understand their functions.

Students will learn about the general issues in health care as well as the specialized concepts of health information management. Those classes include English composition, fundamentals of speech communication, critical thinking and ethics, psychology of personal effectiveness, introduction to microcomputer usage, human anatomy and physiology, human anatomy and physiology laboratory, medical terminology, medical information systems, human sexuality, biology, environmental science, college chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, physical science, the humanities, introduction to philosophy, and introduction to sociology.  

Students will develop professional qualifications relating to the health studies field and health information and informatics.  These qualifications include but are not limited to: the ability to demonstrate an understanding of how the concepts of health and wellness relate to health promotion and disease prevention, to critically appraise the context and quality of healthcare delivery within and outside of the United States, to apply epidemiological approaches to the study of patterns of disease and injury in populations, to evaluate study designs, methods, and strategies for data analysis used in health-related research, to demonstrate an understanding of how technology and legal and ethical issues impact the delivery of healthcare services, and to assess public and global health issues that transcend national borders, class, race, ethnicity, and culture.

    Miami Dade College is a four-year public school located in Miami, Florida. MDC was founded in 1959 as Dade County Junior College and is now the largest college in the Florida College System and the second largest in the United States. Miami Dade has eight campuses and 21 outreach centers located throughout the Miami Dade County.

    Miami Dade College offers more than 150 programs that lead to certificates of completion, associate’s degrees, and bachelor’s degrees. Classes are offered during the daytime, evening, and weekend, as well as online. MDC offers fully online degrees at each level.
