Program Overview

Miami Dade College offers an Associate of Science degree in Accounting Technology for students who are interested in developing entry-level knowledge of accounting principles, procedures and technology. Students will immerse themselves in business practices, understanding the fundamental principles of accounting, management, marketing, economics, and other business aspects critical to the operation and management of an enterprise. Through the program, students will learn about the roles and responsibilities of accountants in business and how accountants are obligated towards ethical and legal responsibilities as part of the profession.

As part of the program, students will study topics relating to business, accounting, and accounting technologies. These classes include managerial accounting, legal environment, business law, principles of finance, managerial accounting lab, principles of business, microcomputers in accounting, business writing, principles of economics, income tax, financial accounting, accounting theory, basic statistics lab, business taxes and returns, intermediate accounting, financial statement analysis, cost accounting, auditing, principles of management, principles of marketing, critical thinking and ethics, fundamentals of speech communication, basic business statistics, introduction to microcomputer usage, and business mathematics.

Upon completion of the program, students will be qualified for future study and entry level positions in accounting and account management.  These qualifications include but are not limited to: the ability to demonstrate proficiency in the fundamental accounting principles and practices that enable firms to compare regular financial data to monitor performance, to employ critical-thinking and analysis skills to solve business problems, to analyze ethical issues in accounting that impact business decisions from economic, financial, and legal standpoints, to evaluate the application of technology as a strategy for competitive advantage in business, and to demonstrate a knowledge of general education topics which will form the foundation of future education.

    Miami Dade College is a four-year public school located in Miami, Florida. MDC was founded in 1959 as Dade County Junior College and is now the largest college in the Florida College System and the second largest in the United States. Miami Dade has eight campuses and 21 outreach centers located throughout the Miami Dade County.

    Miami Dade College offers more than 150 programs that lead to certificates of completion, associate’s degrees, and bachelor’s degrees. Classes are offered during the daytime, evening, and weekend, as well as online. MDC offers fully online degrees at each level.
