Program Overview

Metropolitan State University offers a Master's degree in Public and Nonprofit Administration for students and professionals who are interested in leading and managing organizations and programs in an ethical, strategic, effective, and efficient manner. Students will prepare for the roles involved in management and administration of organizations where profit is not the chief goal. Students will learn about the social responsibilities of nonprofit and government organizations, and how these organizations are utilized to promote the quality of life of the people they represent.

The curriculum is intended to be based in business functions and social aspects involved in the operation of a nonprofit organization or government organization. Those classes include practical research methods for managers, organizational behavior, economics of social issues, strategic human resource management in public and nonprofit organizations, information management, evaluation and public accountability, public ethics and the common good, public administration foundations, public policy analysis, public finance, nonprofit governance and management, resource development and strategic communications, and nonprofit financial management.

Through the program, students will have demonstrated the capabilities and qualifications necessary to operate in a nonprofit or government organization,  These qualifications include but are not limited to the ability to demonstrate an understanding of career opportunities in public and nonprofit sectors, to demonstrate practical education necessary to solve pressing problems in new and creative ways, to demonstrate the ability to lead in an ethical manner in an organization and in public, to demonstrate understanding of diversity and multicultural issues, and to demonstrate cross-organizational and cross-sector issues.

    Metropolitan State University is a four-year public school located in St. Paul, Minnesota. Metro State was founded in 1971 as a college for working adults and is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. The school operates on the semester system.
