Program Overview

The Office Technology-Administrative Assistant (OTAAO) program at Metropolitan Community College awards the Associate in Applied Science degree. The OTAAO program is designed to maximize individual development through the strengthening of knowledge and skills within a wide variety of subjects. Specifically, the program’s curriculum should provide students with a strong foundation in basic computer applications that are essential for nonprofit and for-profit enterprises. This program is intended for students interested in career positions as a supervisor, executive assistant, and general office worker. The program is delivered through a hybrid format of both traditional and online courses.

IT careers require professionals that have the capacity to be curious, think logically, and implement problem-solving skills. Due to the troubleshooting and teamwork expertise that is needed within most IT departments, students that enroll within IT programs at MCC should have a strong background within mathematics and communications. Furthermore, OTAAO students will be trained to solve technical challenges and efficiently communicate with others.

To be eligible for graduation, students will be required to complete 27 general education, 56 major requirement, and 18 option requirement credits. The program may be completed in two years as a full-time student.

The general education courses within the program provide students with a broad foundational education and the essential career skills for future occupations. Students are taught the principles of becoming a productive individual, contributing team member and a lifelong learning student. The credits are divided into 9 communication, 4.5 humanities/social sciences, 4.5 quantitative, and 9 other credits.

The major requirement courses will focus specifically on the Office Technology field. Students will be required to complete the credits from a list of 13 courses. Some courses are Business Office Communications, Keyboard Skill-building, Spreadsheets, Professional Practices, and Workplace Technologies.

The option requirement courses will emphasize topics relating to the Administrative Assistant career path. Students will need to complete four required courses for a total of 18 credits. The four courses are Introduction to Business, Business Law I, Principles of Supervision, and Employability.

    Metropolitan Community College Area is a two-year public school located in Omaha, Nebraska. MCC was created in 1974 to serve residents of Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, and Washington counties in the state of Nebraska. MCC's mission is to provide quality learning experiences for a diverse community of lifelong learners in its four-county service area.

    MCC offers more than 100 one- and two-year career programs, as well as academic transfer programs. Online for-credit courses equal that of on-campus courses and retain similar academic standards.
