Program Overview

The Business Management Associate in Applied Science Degree program, with a specialty in Financial Planning and Investment, may be completed entirely online. The program is designed to educate students in business applications which may be implemented in a variety of career paths within the field. The courses, and their instructor’s, provide a curriculum that has direct application to real-world scenarios and experiences. Students within the Business Management program may also complete a Financial Planning Certificate.

Students within the program must complete a total of 99-108.5 credit hours in order to graduate. The total credits are divided into 27-27.5 general education, 49.5 major requirement, and 22.5-31.5 Course Track Offerings credits. Business Management students may easily switch their major to Accounting during the first year because the core courses for the two programs are the same.

The general education credits are designed to educate the whole person and provide the fundamentals within a broad range of subjects. Courses should provide the students enriched perspectives for real world application. The 27-27.5 general education credits are divided further into 9 communications, 4.5 humanities/social Science, 4.5 quantitative/numeracy skills, and 8.5-9 other credits. Students may also be required to complete another general education prerequisite.

The major requirement courses are intended to increase student’s career skills and provide them with the required knowledge for a smooth transfer to another institution of higher learning. MCC encourages students to combine their general education and major requirement courses each quarter so they may graduate on time.  These credit hours are divided among 12 courses. Some courses provided within the major are Accounting I, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Management, Business Plan Capstone, Microeconomics and Business Finance.

The remaining Business Management Course Track Offering credits may be chosen from a list of different course specialty areas. Some specialties are Credit Management, Financial Services Management, International Business, Merchandising Management, and Real Estate. All students are encouraged to talk to an academic advisor or another faculty member when planning their course of study from the list of business course tracks.

Specifically, the Financial Planning and Investment Course Track Offering is designed to instruct the general business background that is needed for employment in the industry of financial services. The Financial Planning and Investment Course Track is 31.5 credit hours in length and a total of seven courses. Some of the track courses are Investments, Financial Planning Principles, Income Tax Planning, and Estate Planning.

Individuals may learn a variety of essential skills within the Financial Planning and Investment Course Track Offering. Students may increase knowledge in basic investment topics, transactions, fixed-income securities, and mutual funds. Instructors will teach skills such as developing tax planning strategies, evaluate specific investment decisions, and analyzing property ownership issues.
