The Education Grades 7-12 degree at Mercy College is a certification and degree program that offers students the ability to pursue initial or professional certification. Additionally, students may earn up to two certifications along with their degree. Prior to being awarded the Adolescence Education certificate, all students must complete and pass the School of Education exam. The program offers areas of study in English, mathematics, social studies, and science.
Mercy College also offers concentrations in Birth-Grade 2, Childhood Education, Grades 1-6, Teaching Literacy, Birth-Grade 12, TESOL, Bilingual Education, Bilingual Extension to a Teaching Certificate, School Building Leadership and Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership.
The School of Education at Mercy College boasts many concentrations of study and employs many highly qualified faculty to meet each individual student's academic needs. The main goals of the Master of Science in Education program are to provide excellent and applicable content knowledge, provide pedagogical and professional knowledge, understand the importance of technology and its role in the classroom, provide a deep understanding of diversity and the cultural, linguistic, social and learning strengths each student posses, and finally, the School of Education at Mercy College wishes to equip each student to become positive educational leaders in the professional world.
Courses required are offered online as well as at the Mercy College satellite locations in Dobbs Ferry, Bronx, Manhattan, and Yorktown, New York. The School of Education requires all students to complete an online component in order to fully understand the importance technology and the internet have in the classroom.
Students will complete 36 credit hours of course work. Specific program courses offered include, Educational Foundations from Diverse Prospectives, Foundations in Education for Students with Disabilities from Birth through Adolescence, Teaching English as a Second Language, Education Evaluation and Assessment from Early Childhood through Adolescence, Approaches to Literacy Instruction in Early Childhood through Adolescence, and Methods and Materials in Adolescence Education.
The degree/certifications are valid for employment in the New York state public school system.
