Program Overview

McHenry County College's Entrepreneurship Certificate is designed for individuals starting, owning, managing, or expanding a business.  Students will learn basic business principles and important things to consider about how to operate their own businesses.  This certificate is ideal for those already working in the field, as it requires only two 3-credit courses for completion.

The first course students will take is BUS-160: Introduction to Entrepreneurship. In this course, students will learn the step by step process of launching their own small business.  Themes of this course include the identification of new ventures, the start-up process, entrepreneurial skills, legal and procedural concerns, financial managements, and current trends in ownership and management.  This course helps prepare students for the reality of owning their own business by teaching students to evaluate opportunities and threats, identify resources, and survey the media.

The second, and final course required for the Entrepreneurship Certificate is titled BUS-162: Entrepreneurship Business Planning.  This course is designed for students who already have a basic understanding of entrepreneurship principles.  BUS-162 teaches students to create effective business plans by highlighting key elements such as market analysis, management structure, business budgets, and marketing strategies.  Students will also learn about financial planning, cash flow projections, expense management, financial statements and financing strategies. Both courses for this certificate require intermediate abilities in reading, writing, and mathematics.
