Mayville State University offers a BA in Early Childhood that prepares students to work in preschools, Head Start programs, and a variety of other child-related agencies. Students with this degree may serve positions as center directors, educational specialists, supervisors, and program coordinators. The BA in Early Childhood program also opens students to leadership positions such as early childhood administrator, curriculum specialists, and education coordinator in preschool programs.
Students enrolled in this program receive hands-on experience with preschool students and teachers. The University has an on-campus Child Development Center where students can work with young children and receive the experience they need.
Mayville State University prides itself on being the right size for students to receive personal attention from professors and faculty. Small, personalized class settings and advanced technology provided by the college are variables related to success of students within the Early Childhood BA program. Students in this program are given opportunities to develop leadership skills, join sports teams, and particiapte in a variety of other activities and clubs.
Students enrolled in the program are required to have general education courses, core requirements, and one specialization of their choice. General education course topics include communications, English, math, and 24 additional general education credit hours. Core requirements of the Early Childhood program include topics such as observations/assess/interpretation, infants and toddlers, language and literacy, leadership, preK, art/music and play, special needs, home/school communicative relations, child development internship, service learning, education, child and adolescent psych, applied psychology, and Spanish. After general education and core requirements are fulfilled, students then choose one specialization. Specializations include Administration, Infant/Toddler, After School, and Special Needs/Paraprofessional.
