Program Overview

Marshall University offers a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics through Algebra I as a stand-alone certificate or as an area of emphasis within the Master of Arts in Elementary Education or Master of Arts in Secondary Education.  The program is ideal for teachers who have a valid general teaching license in an area other than mathematics and want to expand their licensure to this area.  

Completing this program may lead to an additional endorsement license in West Virginia.  This is done by passing the Praxis II Middle Level Mathematics exam.  

Upon completing this exam participants may then request an additional endorsement by the West Virginia Department of Education to teach at grade levels 5-9 or 5-Adult.  Other state licensure requirements must be ascertained by the student.

Admission requirements for this program include: holding a valid education teaching license in a an area other than mathematics; meet all requirements for admission for admission as a degree or graduate certificate program student in the Elementary or Secondary Education Program which are an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a GPA of at least 2.5; a test score from either the Miller Analogies Test (scaled score of 387 or higher) or Graduate Record Exam (combined score of 800 on verbal and quantitative sections); a completed application form; and official transcripts form previously attended colleges.

The certificate is a 24 credit hour program made up of eight courses.  These required classes are: Technical Mathematics for Mathematics Educators, Finite Mathematics for Mathematics Educators, Algebra for Mathematics Educators, Teaching Mathematics, Precalculus for Mathematics Educators, Geometry for Mathematics Educators, Computing and Instructional Design, and Supervised Field Practicum/Seminar in Mathematics Grades 5-9 or Supervised Field Practicum/Seminar in Mathematics Grades 5-12.  

If the student wishes to complete the full MA degree they must complete five additional courses in: Educational Evaluation, Advanced Studies in Human Development, Educational Research and Writing, Capstone Experience, and an Elective.
