Program Details

Marshall University offers a Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language for teachers who specialize in preparing students to enter schools whose first language is not English.  This program strives to provide a certificate endorsement for elementary and secondary teachers who have met initial licensure requirements through the ease of online courses. 

The certificate in ESL is a 21 credit hour program that usually takes three semesters to complete.  Course curriculum includes seven classes in the following areas: Applications Software in the Classroom Curriculum Area, Second Language Acquisition, Linguistics for ESL, Intercultural Communication, Methods and Materials for ESL: Language Development, Methods and Materials for ESL: Literacy Acquisition, and a Practicum for Teaching ESL.  

The intended occupations for certificate holders are Adult Basic and Secondary Education and Literacy Teachers and Instructors; and Foreign Language and Literature Teachers (Postsecondary).

Applicants should apply for admission as a Certificate/Professional Development student and complete a gainful employment disclosure so that informed decisions can be made about the program.
