Program Overview

The Associate in Science in Accounting degree offered by Luzerne County Community College is a program of study that is available to students in a hybrid format. Hybrid format means that students are required to take courses not only online, but also on-campus. Not all required courses for this degree are available through an online format. The Associate of Science degree in Accounting aims to provide students with the opportunity to complete General Education courses that are normally required for a transfer to a four-year baccalaureate degree or professional degree. Students also can acquire required credits in both Business and Accounting and use them toward completing their higher-level degrees, if they so choose. This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

The accounting program at Luzerne County Community College aims to provide its students with a foundational set of knowledge and skills in Accounting and Business. By the end of this program, a student should know how to apply the appropriate skills to the field of Accounting. Students also should learn how to understand the basic principles and laws that are used in the field of Accounting. Students should be able to prepare and analyze United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principle financial statements, to prepare individual’s United States tax returns, and to demonstrate concepts of Accounting used in a manufacturing environment. Students should also be able to use critical thinking skills in Accounting situations and to apply basic Business Law concepts to Accounting situations.

Students enrolled in this program must take and complete 64 credit hours of courses in order to graduate. This includes General Education courses in subject areas such as: English, Mathematics, History, Science, Health and Physical Education, and Social Science. The required Accounting and Business courses include: Principles of Accounting I and II, Spreadsheet Analysis using Microsoft Excel, Principles of Economics I (Macro), Mathematics of Finance, Intermediate Accounting I and II, Business Law I, Cost Accounting Tax Accounting, Basic Statistics, and Calculus for Business and the Social Sciences.

    Established in 1967, Luzerne County Community College is a two-year public college located in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, which offers associate’s degrees, certificates, and diploma programs. LCCC states a mission that promotes “excellence in education, fosters student success in achievement of goals, and positively impacts Luzerne county and the surrounding Northeastern Pennsylvania region." Courses are offered in classroom settings as well as in online learning. LCCC’s Distance Education program offers five associate degree programs online as well as several other courses. Each of these online courses consists of a minimum of 80% online content.
