Program Details

Lord Fairfax Community College offers an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in Liberal Arts to provide extensive training in critical thinking, oral and written communication, problem solving, and other various career related skills. This degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree in American studies, anthropology, art, communication, economics, English, geography, government, history, humanities, journalism, library science, literature, music, philosophy, pre-law, psychology, religion, sociology, or theatre arts. The Liberal Arts A.A.S. program is four semesters (two years) in length and qualifies students for many entry-level positions for a variety of different employers.

Individuals who obtain this degree receive the equivalent of a freshman and sophomore education at a four year college or university. Specific general education courses are required in order to make transferring easy for students. Courses in topics such as English, health/physical education, humanities, mathematics, science, and social science are required by Lord Fairfax Community College. Students completing these general education course requirements may refer to the Virginia Community College Transfer Guide to receive specific information on how their courses will directly transfer into a specific four year college or university. Students are strongly urged to start the transfer process as early as possible and consult with their advisor when doing so.

The Liberal Arts A.A.S. degree requires the completion of 61-63 credit hours. These credit hours consist of general education requirements and approved electives. Electives required by the program include mathematics, foreign language, fine arts, literature, social science, science with laboratory, humanities, communications, and global studies. In order to accommodate for different preferences of students, many online classes are available through Lord Fairfax Community College. This allows students to have a flexible experience while working towards their degree.
