Program Overview

The advanced certificate in Bilingual Extension is intended to provide necessary coursework and preparation that allows a student to apply for NY state extension in this field. Students can transfer up to six credits from a master’s degree into this advanced certificate. Coursework will provide students with the theory, multicultural perspectives, and practical background to work in bilingual and/or dual-language classroom settings.

The courses will allow students to obtain the knowledge and skills of the theories of bilingual education and bilingualism, the multicultural viewpoints of education, the social, psychological, and psycho-linguistic aspects of bilingualism, the methods of teaching English language arts and native language arts to bilingual English language learners, and methods of teaching content area instruction to bilingual English language learners, using both the native language and English. Before completing the program, the student must demonstrate proficiency by passing the Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA) in the language in which the extension is sought.
