Program Overview

The Associate of Arts in Secondary Education is a transferable degree program offered by Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois. The program is intended for students who wish to pursue a career in secondary education after completing a bachelor degree. This program lays the foundation of requirements in general education and some educational courses needed to matriculate to a senior institution such as a four-year college or university.

Students enrolled in this program should also consider taking the Test of Academic Proficiency before applying to a bachelor’s program.

Like most associate degree at Lincoln Land Community College, this program requires the student to take and pass general education courses. These courses include EGL 111 and 102 Composition I and II, SPE 101 Public Speaking Fundamentals, and POS 101 or 201 Introduction to American Politics or State and Local Government. Classes that are recommended for general education to fulfill the rest of the requirements are: ART 101 Art Appreciation, BIO 101 General Biology, HIS 101 or 102 History of Western Civilization I or II, PSY 101 Introduction to Psychology, and SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology. Courses in Humanities, Mathematics, and Physical Science are also required.

Courses specific to this major are EDU 201 Introduction to Teacher Education, PSY 210 Educational Psychology, HLT 200 First Aid or HLT 201 Health in Today’s Society, MUS 104 Music Appreciation, and PSY 220 Human Development. Further electives in Education and Physical Education are required. The recommended time frame for completion of this degree is over the course of four semesters. Four to six courses each semester should be taken to fulfill requirements in this time span.

Because of changes in federal guidelines prospective students of Lincoln Land Community College should be aware that only permanent residents of Illinois are able enroll in this program. Some exceptions can be made.
