Program Overview

The Associate of Arts in Philosophy is a transferable program offered by Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois. This program is intended for students who plan on pursuing a bachelor’s degree, in a subject such as Philosophy, at a senior institution such as a four-year college or university. Students who plan on advancing into a four-year college or university should verify the requirements needed for those senior-programs, which may vary from school to school.

General education courses help to broaden the student’s critical thinking skills and to solidify their foundations of knowledge. These courses include EGL 111 and 102 Composition I and II, SPE 101 Public Speaking Fundamentals, and POS 101 or 201 Introduction to American Politics or State and Local Government.

Other suggested courses that count as requirements for this degree include: HUM 101 Introduction to Humanities, PHI 201 Introduction to Logic, PSY 101 Introduction to Psychology, SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology. Additional classes in Humanities, Mathematics, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences are required.

The courses recommended to fulfill requirements in this major are PHI 204 Introduction to Philosophy, PHI 205 Ethics: Morality and Contemporary Values, and PHI 210 World Religions. A student pursuing this degree is encouraged to take four courses in a foreign language starting from the introductory class to the intermediate classes.

The recommended time frame for completion of this degree is over the course of four semesters. Four to six courses each semester should be taken to fulfill requirements in this time span. Students must take 63 credit hours to complete this program.
