Program Overview

The Associate of Applied Sciences with a focus on Paraprofessional Education is an occupational program offered by Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois. It is intended for students who wish to pursue careers in classroom instruction in a K-12 setting. The design of this program meets the Title I school districts’ requirements as specified by the No Child Left Behind Act. This program is not a transferable degree.

Like most associate degree at Lincoln Land Community College, this program requires the student to take and pass general education courses. These courses include EGL 111 and 102 Composition I and II, MAT 104 General Education Mathematics, PSI 101 Physical Science, and POS 101 or 201 Introduction to American Politics or State and Local Government.

The major-specific courses required for this program are: EDU 201 Introduction to Teacher Education, EDU 210 Instructional Technology, EDU 215 Students with Disabilities, EDU 220 Diversity of Schools and Society, EDU 230 Reading Principles, and PSY 210 Educational Psychology.

Required courses that aid this program are: HIS 101 or 102 History of Western Civilization I or II, LIT 120 Introduction to Children’s Literature, PSY 214 Introduction to Child Psychology, SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology, and SPE 101 Public Speaking Fundamentals.

Twelve additional hours in electives such as Music, Art, or Psychology are also required. EDU 201 is a course that not only involves classroom learning, but also thirty hours of clinical field experience and 2 laboratory hours. Up to sixteen credit hours can be waived through a prior experience portfolio. The recommended time frame for completion of this degree is over the course of four semesters. Four to six courses each semester should be taken to fulfill requirements in this time span.

This online degree program from Lincoln Land Community College is a practical and convenient solution to students who lack the ability to access traditional education opportunities. Because of changes in federal guidelines prospective students of Lincoln Land Community College should be aware that only permanent residents of Illinois are able enroll in this program. Some exceptions can be made.

LLCC was founded in 1968 by primarily farmers to provide high-quality, accessible, and cost-effective educational opportunities in the central Illinois area. The campus is located less than half of a mile away from University of Illinois at Springfield.
