Office Support Specialist Certificate of Completion
The Office Support Specialists Certificate of Completion is an occupational program offered by Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois. This program is intended for individuals who wish to pursue a career as an office support specialist and wants an official certification of completion for this purpose. An office support specialist performs complex office/clerical support duties related to a work unit. Functions such as maintaining records, writing correspondences, and resolving discrepancies in procedural problems are some of the responsibilities an office support specialist may have.
To prepare a student for these challenges, Lincoln Land Community College has set up this occupational program with the end goal of acquiring and honing skills and knowledge as well as a certificate of completion. A certificate of completion is a form of recognition awarded by a community college for meeting minimum occupational course requirements. Since this is not a degree, non-related courses such as general education classes are not required.
The courses required for completion of this program span the spectrum of office skills. CAS 121 Computer Systems and Business Applications covers an introduction to computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software. Students also learn about computer literacy, the Internet, security, history, and ethics.
Students enrolled in this program have to choice whether to take EGL 104 Career Communications I or EGL 111 Composition. The former is a more practical class related to on-the-job communication skills. Fundamentals of office composition such as business letters, memos, phone techniques, letters of application, etc. are taught in this course. EGL 111, on the other hand, is more of an orthodox class on college composition. It teaches the student the process of developing and supporting a thesis in an organized essay.
Office-related courses in this program aim to provide the student with necessary skills specific to office careers. COS 111, Office Procedures, is the exploration of office technology and an overview of the roles and responsibilities of an office professional. COS 200, Office Correspondence, is the class where students use word processing and keyboarding software to build keyboarding speed and accuracy. A student must be able to type a minimum of 40-45 words per minute, or else they must take COS 101 before gaining entry to COS 200.
COS 220 Records Management is a course that provides education in the administration and control of records. Skills such as creation, maintenance, protection, and disposition of records in paper-based and electronic database systems for storage are also taught. COS 225, Office Supervision and Management, is the capstone course that prepares students for the role of supervisor through the teaching of problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
