Program Overview

The Office Aide/Office Assistant Certificate of Completion is an occupational program offered by Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois. This program is intended for individuals who wish to gain official certification in the skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective office aide or assistant. A certificate of completion is a form of recognition awarded by a community college for meeting minimum occupational course requirements. This certificate can be used as a foundation for further pursuits such as a career in an office setting. Since this is not a degree, non-related courses such as general education classes are not required.

The courses that are required for this program teach office related competencies such as computer skills, composition, and administrative procedures. CAS 121 Computer Systems and Business Applications covers an introduction to computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation software. Students also learn about computer literacy, the Internet, security, history, and ethics.

Students enrolled in this program have to choice whether to take EGL 104 Career Communications I or EGL 111 Composition. The former is a more practical class related to on-the-job communication skills. Fundamentals of office composition such as business letters, memos, phone techniques, letters of application, etc. are taught in this course. EGL 111, on the other hand, is more of an orthodox class on college composition. It teaches the student the process of developing and supporting a thesis in an organized essay.

COS 111, Office Procedures, is the exploration of office technology and an overview of the roles and responsibilities of an office professional. COS 200, Office Correspondence, is the class where students use word processing and keyboarding software to build keyboarding speed and accuracy. A student must be able to type a minimum of 40-45 words per minute, or else they must take COS 101 before gaining entry to COS 200. All of these classes equip a student with the skills, competencies, and knowledge needed to be an office aide or assistant.
