The Associate of Applied Sciences with a professional focus on Medical Office Assistant is an occupational program offered by Lincoln Land Community College. This program is intended for individuals who would like to enter into a career in the medical office field. Office and computer related competencies, as well as some general education courses are offered through this program.
Like most associate degree at Lincoln Land Community College, this program requires the student to take and pass general education courses. These courses include EGL 111 and 102 Composition I and II or COM 104 and 105 Career Communications I and II, BIO 101 General Biology, MAT 104 General Education Mathematics, and POS 101 or 201 Introduction to American Politics or State and Local Government. These courses aim to broaden a student’s thinking and understanding skills.
The courses that comprise this program have varying subject areas. Some courses are Medicine related, some are Computer Science, and some are Business and Technology related. All of these skills are foundational to developing into an effective Medical Office Assistant.
The required courses in this program are: CAS 121 Computer Systems & Business Applications, CAS 130 Word Processing Applications (MS Word), CAS 140 Spreadsheet Applications (MS Excel) or CAS 150 Database Applications (MS Access), COS 111 Administrative Office Procedures, COS 114 Medical Transcription I, MCS 120 Fundamentals of Medical Science, MCS 130 Fundamentals of Medical Science II, COS 200 Advanced Document Production, MCS 219 Principles of ICD-9 –CM Coding, COS 220 Filing and Records Management, COS 225 Office Management, COS 226 Professional Development, COS 240 Office Systems Technology Internship, CTC 123 Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, and SPE 104 or 101 Interpersonal Communications or Public Speaking Fundamentals. The class COS 240 is an internship wherein the student works with an office systems-related employer for a minimum of 225 hours.
The recommended time frame for completion of this degree is over the course of four semesters. Four to six courses each semester should be taken to fulfill requirements in this time span.
This online degree program from Lincoln Land Community College is a practical and convenient solution to students who lack the ability to access traditional education opportunities. Because of changes in federal guidelines prospective students of Lincoln Land Community College should be aware that only permanent residents of Illinois are able enroll in this program. Some exceptions can be made.
