Program Overview

The Associate of Arts in Elementary Education is a transferable program offered by Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois. This program is intended for students who plan on completing a baccalaureate degree at a four-year college, university, or senior institution. Those interested in pursuing careers in pre-k through junior high school education in public or private schools should apply to this program. This program encourages students to take the Test of Academic Proficiency before transferring to a senior institution. Students who plan on advancing into a four-year college or university should verify the requirements needed for those senior-programs, which may vary from school to school. 

Like most associate degree at Lincoln Land Community College, this program requires the student to take and pass general education courses. These courses include EGL 111 and 102 Composition I and II, SPE 101 Public Speaking Fundamentals, and POS 101 or 201 Introduction to American Politics or State and Local Government. Recommended general education classes include: ART 101 Art Appreciation, BIO 101 General Biology, HIS 101 History of Western Civilization I or HIS 102 History of Western Civilization II, MAT 251 Math for Elementary Teachers I, MAT 252 Math for Elementary Teachers II, MUS 104 Music Appreciation, PSY 101 Introduction to Psychology, SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology. Also recommended are another humanities course and a Physical Science course. 

Courses specific to this major subject area are: EDU 201 Introduction to Teacher Education, EDU 210 Instructional Technology, and PSY 210 Educational Psychology. Support courses that are recommended for the Associate of Arts in Elementary Education are HLT 201 Health in Today’s Society and PSY 220 Human Development. The recommended time frame for completion of this degree is over the course of four semesters. Four to six courses each semester should be taken to fulfill requirements in this time span. 

This online degree program from Lincoln Land Community College is a practical and convenient solution to students who lack the ability to access traditional education opportunities. Because of changes in federal guidelines prospective students of Lincoln Land Community College should be aware that only permanent residents of Illinois are able enroll in this program. Some exceptions can be made.
